Hero of the Month, Fanta Sissoko of Stony Point

Fanta Sissoko

Fanta Sissoko 20, of Stony Point is an ambitious, worldly, compassionate and inspirational young woman who has been paving the way on social issues her entire college life. Fanta, a graduate of North Rockland High School and a Siena College Senior has dedicated her undergraduate career to community development and social change. By participating in Siena’s Bonner Service Leader Program she has been able to work in numerous youth programs and has completed over 1,500 hours of service.  Fanta was placed at the Capital District YMCA where she works on youth development. She has been working with the Black and Latino Achievers program which strives to aid youth in reaching higher educational and career goals. They do recreational activities for teambuilding, go on educational field trips, have workplace tours, and community service projects all with the hopes of inspiring inner city youth to reach their full potential in life.

Fanta has served as a Bonner Congress representative where she was selected to represent Siena’s Bonner Program at a National Conference and serves as a liaison, serves as a Girl Scout Leader, implemented a youth yoga program, taught literacy skills to refugees and is an active AmeriCorps volunteer.  Fanta says she is motivated because she knows she has something to contribute to the community. “There is a lot to learn working with people. Everyone has a story, strengths, skills and potential. It is beautiful to be part of the process of unlocking it. I am trying to pay it forward because our communities are stronger when there are more educated, healthy and successful members” she says. Fanta has accomplished so much in the community all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA in her major of Sociology.  In May of 2016 Fanta embarked on a 5 week Global Service Internship in Botshabelo, South Africa which houses, nurtures, and educated over 250 orphans whose lives have been devastated by HIV/AIDS. In South Africa she hopes to combine her passion, experience and education to encourage the youth of Botshabelo.  Rockland County is blessed to have such a kind soul like Fanta Sissoko as a resident and the world is a better place because of her.  To learn more please visit www.botshabelo.organ
